Practical Ways to Cut Out Plastic in Our Grocery Shopping

Updated: Oct 18, 2018

We love giving you new ways to cut out plastic in different areas in your life, but did you know that your grocery shopping habits have a huge influence on how much plastic you are using? Well luckily for you, we have a few tips to cut down on plastic for your next trip to the store!

1. Pay Attention to the Container

Sometimes out of habit we don’t even notice what we are putting in our cart, but pay attention to what your food is packaged in. Whether it is plastic wrap or a plastic container, try to find food that is packaged in something else.

2. Avoid the Produce Bags

Want another plastic item that most of us often forget? Produce bags. However, they aren’t necessary. Since you should be washing your produce anyways, try placing it in the cart with everything else. Worried about it getting smushed? Keep it with your bread or other delicate items.

3. Don’t give into the Drink Temptations

Another plastic culprit that beckons for you is the plastic bottles of water or soda in the store. Instead of plastic, buy the cans of soda. Or if you want to save even more materials, buy a sodastream machine or water filter to make your drinks at home!

4. Buy Fresh Bread and Cheese

This is one of the spendier options, but if you can, try buying the non-plastic packaged bread and cheese. It is cutting down on plastic and it usually tastes even better!

5. Use Reusable Bags

Of course we have to remind you of how important reusable bags are. You might not realize how many plastic bags you use until you have a cluttered drawer full of them that you don’t know what to do with. Reusable bags eliminate this problem all together. Plus, some grocery stores offer discounts to those that use their own bags!

So there you have it! A few tips to cut down on your plastic waste at the grocery store. If you liked these tips, be sure to like and share this post to tell all of your friends!
